LEPHALALE – The town’s municipal by-laws have at long last been accepted and published in the provincial gazette, delegates heard at a community policing forum (CPF) last Thursday.
DA councillor, Atrid Basson explained that Lephalale always had by laws, but that these were very outdated. “Some of the fines were very low and therefore people thought it was a waste of time to enforce.”
It is the responsibility of the municipality and the Magistrate to determine fines related to the different offences. The public can however be involved in the process.
To encourage public participation, the CPF nominated representatives from Marapong, Ellisras, Onverwacht and the farming community to serve with police sub sector managers on a committee to suggest fines and determine which crimes are prevalent in Lephalale to ensure that by-laws which deal with these crimes are in place. These suggestions will then be handed to the municipality.
