Contracts related to the Medupi building project will soon be made public. The DA announced this week that Eskom has complied with the DA’s application for access to all Medupi contracts in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA).
“The DA has received confirmation from Eskom that it is in the process of compiling all the contractual agreements with contractors at the Medupi Power Plant,” Natasha Michael DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises said in a statement this week.
“It is imperative that all contracts related to Medupi be made public as the continuous delays in the completion of construction at Medupi could have ramifications in Eskom’s ability to provide electricity to the country.
“The agreements between contractors and Eskom must be scrutinised to determine whether any strict controls were put in place to ensure that parties meet their deadlines and targets and what action can be taken against the contractors for failure to do so. This is particularly necessitated by that, part of the many reasons for the delay in the roll out of the first unit at Medupi power station were allegedly as a result of a sub-contractor connected to the ANC-linked Hitachi Power Africa. The DA learnt this from both Eskom and Hitachi officials at an investigative oversight visit to Eskom’s Medupi Power Station in Limpopo last month.
“The DA looks forward to receiving all contracts related to the construction of Medupi Power Plant and finding solutions to the continuous delays,” Michael added.
