LEPHALALE - The Lenaka la Tshukudu-project which aims to raise awareness and raise funds for Rhino conservation was dealt a blow this week when four companies announced their withdrawal from the project with immediate effect citing differences in opinion regarding the financing of the project as the reason. Molalatau Security, Waynbel Construction, Pageworks and SOHO Films told the media on Monday that they would not go ahead with phase two of the project. A representative for the four companies, Wayne
Derksen, did not want to elaborate with regards to the
reasons for the decision.
The Rhino project started with Phase 1 in August this year with adventurer, Anton Fouché, who walked from Pretoria to Musina pulling a life size replica of a rhino. The companies were involved in securing sponsors and administrating the project. Molalatau Security spent around R100 000 in branding and marketing, but the project team could not secure any further sponsorships apart from the Spar in Musina which donated R10 000. Funds collected from the public and businesses during the walk, hardly covered the team on the road's expenses.
Fouché told Northern News this week that he is grateful for the companies that supported him during the first phase of the project. “It is unfortunate that a lack of communication between the project leader, Mr Derksen, and myself has lead to this. But I will continue to visit schools and businesses throughout the country, because this is a cause I feel strongly about.”
Last week Northern News reported that none of the funds raised to date was available for actual rhino
conservation or anti-poaching activities.
