President Jacob Zuma arrived hand in hand with Limpopo premier, Stan Mathabatha and transport minister, Dipuo Peters at the University of Limpopo’s Oscar Mpethe Stadium for the official road opening of the R81 between Polokwane and Giyani on Tuesday.
The opening of the road is one of the major highlights of October Transport Month and forms part of the government’s programme of showcasing its infrastructural projects. “Government has left nothing to chance by providing people with state-of-the-art developments,” said Premier Stan Mathabatha at the opening ceremony. “At least 14 000 people die on our roads every year,” Zuma told delegates. The president added that a broader road will be more passable and will lessen accidents.
This is particularly good news for the vast number of Zion Christian Church goers that use the road on their frequent pilgrimages. The R71 which has also been broadened and leads to the Kruger National Park will allow smooth movement of cars - a blessing for the tourist who visit this area in peak seasons.
“The overall objective is to develop infrastructure that boost economic development to stimulate growth, create jobs and also improve the living and working conditions of our citizens,” said Zuma. - Botshelo Letlabola (botshelo@noordnuus.co.za)
