Lephalale and Villa Nora police officers participated in a sting operation in Shongoane last Thursday in an attempt to arrest illegal immigrants in the area. While on patrol they were informed that two Zimbabwean nationals gave a local resident two guns for safekeeping while police raided shacks.
The informant initially took the guns and sold it for R500 to foreign shopkeepers. According to W.O. Frans Mokoena the man later told police that his conscience got the best of him and he approached police with information about the whereabouts of the weapons he sold.
The shopkeepers, informant and the two Zimbabweans were arrested that same day. It was later established that one of the weapons belonged to a police officer and was stolen recently from his house in Modimolle. The other gun was reportedly stolen in Gauteng. The case is being investigated.
