Mogalakwena mayor, William Mabuela, blamed parents for the moral degeneration of South African society when he addressed community members on government’s Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) last week.
Speaking in the Aboo Tayob Hall in Mokopane, Mabuela said a number of despicable acts had taken place in the Mogalakwena municipality and something needed to be done urgently to build a caring, humane and ethical society.
He said parents and leaders set the example in society, but when they become wealthy they let go of the traditions, morals and values. Children see this and follow their parents’ examples. “As parents we condone this through our own behaviour,” he said.
Mabuela said the MRM seeks to eradicate the blatant disregard for the sanctity of human life, the abuse of women and children, crime, substance abuse, lack of respect for the next person and their property among South Africans and rekindle the values of a nation that knows the difference
between right and wrong.
“Our mission should be to enhance all the positive values that are enshrined in the Constitution. It should promote the right to life, human dignity, equality, justice, the rights of women and children, freedom from discrimination and all other freedoms that are guaranteed in our Constitution,” Mabuela continued.
“MRM is a valuable nation building initiative. The issues that the movement advocates affect all South Africans regardless of political affiliation, gender, race, culture and other forms of differentiation. This programme brings us together to eradicate moral decay and to build an ethical society,” he
concluded.
