MAHWELERENG – Different indigenous groups showcased cultural clothing and traditions on Thursday at Bathong Community Centre as part of National Heritage Day celebrations. The crowd chanted and ululated as different cultures were on display and the sound of trumpets and drums resonated in the hall with the crowd dancing along.

The event was organised by Youngblood crew to create a social cohesion by encouraging all cultures to actively celebrate their common heritage. “The event has grown since 2010 when we started. People  understand that we encourage different cultures and traditions,” says MokgadiLetlalo, a chairperson of Youngblood Crew.

All attendees from young to old, who were dressed in different traditional attires, displayed the country’s rich culture and diversity. “The heritage, history and the cultural roots of this colourful community is something that must be celebrated and must be codified. This day is an acknowledgement and appreciation of South Arica’s differences,” says Letlalo.

Puseletso Sekhu, a crafter, said this event helped him portray his artwork to the community. Over the years, Sekhu has been producing a vibrant crafts by using natural resources and recycled products such as wires, plastic bags, card boxes, among others, from landfills. “My art is rich and diverse. Coming to a huge ceremony like this helps to connect with people, share ideas and build new relationships,” says Sekhu.
