Pedestrian fatalities is a major concern for road safety and emergency servicesLimpopo. While the sidewalks of our towns' central business areas bustles with pedestrians and hawkers, there are many roads in our villages that users should take care on.
Pedestrians – people who travel by foot, wheelchair, stroller, or similar means – are among the most vulnerable users of the road.
Safety tips from Arrive Alive for pedestrians:
- Teach children to apply the basics of “look right, left and right again.”
- Always obey road signs and traffic lights
- Wear bright colours with high visibility when possible
- Do not walk in the road, but on the pavement. If there is no pavement, walk as near to the edge as possible, facing the oncoming traffic.
- When crossing the road and there is a pedestrian bridge, use it, even if it means walking further.
- Never assume that you have been seen – many disturbances might attract the attention of a motorist, distracting his/her eyes from the road.
- Do not walk and stop halfway across the road – remain beside the road until both lanes are clear for you to cross safely.
- Avoid roads at all times when intoxicated.
