The SAPS have launched the Junior Commissioners Project, an initiative to get youngsters involved in working against crime in communities. The Lephalale police visited Ellisras Hoërskool, Tielelo High School and Phegelelo High School. From these schools, ten learners where chosen to participate in a debate with the topic: “If I was a junior station commander, how would I help solve crime.”
Of the ten learners, only five could be chosen to go further in this project. Schools in Shongoane were included. Their debate took place on Tuesday and five learners were selected from there.
These winners will be participating in a Provincial Debate on 24 January and if chosen again to the next round, they will be going through to the Nationals. In the end, winners will be chosen for only four positions. 1- Junior Station Commander, 2-Junior Detective Commander, Junior Vispol Commander and Junior Support Head. Candidate five will be placed as a reserve. They will serve these positions in the community for a period of 12 Months, where they will be participating in campaigns with the police in the community.
“We look forward to working with these children, as they are smart and bright. They could really help us reach out to their peer group”, said Warrant Officer Mokoena.
