LEPHALALE - No, says Joshua Kwapa, media liaison officer for the Department of Development, Environment and Tourism.
He says that their department was unaware that the gate attendants at D’Nyala have been under instruction since December 2011 not to allow day visitors into the park, because of “management problems”.
Kwapa confirmed that measures for stricter security were supposed to be introduced after it had come to light that certain people were doing ‘scout drives’ instead of game drives, seeking poaching opportunities within the reserve. But, he said, the reserve was still supposed to be open for visitors, so the current situation will be investigated with urgency.
Northern News confirmed that Limpopo Wildlife Resorts, who handle the bookings for accommodation in D’Nyala, is doing business as usual and overnight visitors to the reserve may still do game drives within the normal allocated times.
