LEPHALALE - Only two weeks on the job and newly appointed municipal manager (MM), Bob Naidoo, has hit the ground running. Northern News spoke to Naidoo this week about the future of the municipality that he now has to lead.
Naidoo agrees that there are many challenges facing the municipality. He would not comment on the Mayor’s refusal to sign his five-year contract nor the fact that the municipality is technically bankrupt. He was willing to speak about the fact that President Jacob Zuma mentioned the Waterberg in his state of the nation address and that the Premier mentioned Lephalale specifically in his state of the province address.
He agrees that this kind of attention places pressure on the municipality to perform, but says that it drives him and his team to perform. “We don’t see it as pressure, but rather as an opportunity to shine.”
“We are very excited about the road and rail project that will link Lephalale to Mpumalanga and Richards Bay, we are even more excited about the fact Medupi will start producing energy next year.
Naidoo says he wants to make the municipality more accessible to the public. “We are working on establishing a help desk to improve our customer service. We invite the public to comment on where we can improve as a municipality.”
Naidoo is not worried about the fact that five provincial departments have been placed under administration.
“The state of the province’s finance will not impact the workings of the municipality. We have secured enough funding from national government to go ahead with infrastructure development, nothing has changed.”
The expectation is that Lephalale will grow into the energy hub of South Africa and according to Naidoo the municipality has altered its vision statement to accommodate the expansion.
“I can not reveal just yet, what the new vision statement is, but it will inspire employees to give their all to see Lephalale grow into a well run city. All I can say is - watch this space.”
