“I am probably related to half the population of Ga-Seleka. All my family from both my mother and father’s side are here. I am born from the Motebele clan, the Mocheko clan, the Seleka clan, the Montshioa clan and the Kgang clan who all form part of the Baphuting Bo Seleka Tribe. I am therefore an obedient subject of His Majesty Kgosi Phetogo Seleka.”
Motebele studied Law at the University of Limpopo and worked previously as a tax practitioner for Arthur Andersen. In 2001 he joined Deloitte and in 2009 he was asked to head the ticketing operation for the 2010 FIFA World cup. When the opportunity came to join the municipality in Lephalale he grabbed at it.
“I grew up here, so I had a pretty good Idea of what to expect. Make no mistake this place is great in every respect but I just miss the anonymity that came with living in Johannesburg. Other than that, It is great to be back,” he says, adding that he also misses his wife and three children who are still in Johannesburg.
About what a strategic manager does Moteble says: “I am responsible for the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), Administration of the offices of the Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip, Public Participation Programmes, Performance Management and providing Strategic guidance on rural development matters.”
Motbebele says the biggest challenge for him thus far is to communicate his vision for his department to staff in such a way that they buy into it. “It is a huge challenge because I know from experience that people don’t easily change their established way of doing things.”
