LEPHALALE - Drug-related crimes have increased nationally with 44, 8% since 2009, this shocking fact was made public last week when the police minister, Nathi Mthethwa, released the annual crime statistics for 2011/2012. Commenting on the year-on-year increase of over 15%, Mthethwa said: “Drug trafficking must become everybody’s concern.” A primary school in Lephalale took his advice and sent out a letter, asking for help from different government departments and institutions. The request is to intervene in the school’s growing drug problems. The letter which was signed by the principal and school board chairperson states: “We as the inclusive committee of the above mentioned school experienced learners with drug problems as from Grade 1 to the last grade, Grade 7. We have tried to help them, but it seems to be beyond our efforts because we even called their parents and realised they are also alcoholics and drug users. We ask assistance from you as colleagues in public service concerning the above problem.” The letter was sent to the local police office, social workers in the area, the Induna, the Lephalale municipality, the department of education’s circuit office, the ward committee, Love Life and the department of health.
