On the April 18 an HIV Mother to Child Transmission (MTCT) Allivation Indaba was held in Mogakakwena. Statistically Waterberg Municipality has the second highest HIV infection rate in the country.
The indaba which was implemented by the department of health focussed on mother to child transmission because of the high number of HIV-positive pregnant women who are not on antiretroviral treatment (ARVs). These mothers are at 15 to 45 percent higher risk of  passing the virus on to their babies during pregnancy, labour, breastfeeding and delivery. ARV's reduces the risk of infecting an unborn or newborn baby to less than 5 percent.
The earlier in their pregnancy term woman get checked the better equipped  they will be and the more knowledge they will have which will help them get the right medication and treatment.
