The department of economic development, environment and tourism held a workshop for councillors and traditional leaders at the Lephalale municipality last Friday. The department urged officials to get communities involved in the liquor license application process. The presentation outlined conditions attached to liquor licenses and responsibilities of community members in general.
According to officials an applicant needs permission to apply for a liquor licence from either the Tribal authority or the Municipality. Once the application has been lodged it shall be open for inspection at the office of the magistrate for anyone to inspect. Objections to the granting of a liquor licence should be made in writing no later than 28 days after the application was lodged. The objection must be in duplicate and be fully motivated. The objector or representative’s address, ID and telephone number and the specific application concerned must be clearly indicated. The liquor board sits once a month to deliberate on liquor licence applications and objections.
Community leaders and members of the community are asked to report irresponsible liquor trading in their communities. The Waterberg district representative, M.I Takakgale can be contacted on 014 717 1093
