The top 18 spellers from six schools in Limpopo vetted it out against each other to see who will participate in the nationwide final to be held on 28 May in Johannesburg. The top scholars were in first place: Michelle Mokhonwana of Potgietersrus Primary School, second place: Ramaboea Mphiwa of Potgietersrus Primary School, and in third place: Munaka Munyai of Pietersburg English Medium Primary.
Taking the honours in the top three schools category were in first place: Potgietersrus Primary School, in second place Laerskool Krugerpark and in third place: Pietersburg English Medium Primary. The former Idols finalist, Lloyd Cele, entertained the children with his hits while master of ceremony, Solly Philander, made sure the room was filled with laughter.
Pick n Pay’s Spell Check was launched six years ago in the Pretoria region and is now a national competition to find the country’s top speller. Since its inception, the campaign, which is designed along the lines of the traditional American Spelling Bee, has been a resounding success with both educators and learners.
Malcolm Mycroft, General Manager of Marketing at Pick n Pay said congratulated the Limpopo winners and wished them luck for the grand finals. The three top-placed spellers from each region will go on to compete in the national finals on May 28 at Pick n Pay’s Johannesburg Office in Kensington. The national winner will receive the coveted Pick n Pay Spell Check trophy. The top three schools nationally will win Pick n Pay vouchers to the value of R5 000, R2 500, and R1 000 respectively.
