Worker’s Day celebrations in Marapong
focussed on the
ongoing fight against
poverty, inequality,
corruption and gender-based violence.
Cosatu also called for the establishment of a workers’ bank and vowed to protect mine and metal workers’ interests against what it decribed as “new fake unions.”
The celebration was graced by the presence of Lephalale mayor, Jack Maeko and Modimolle mayor, Elizabeth Lekalakala as well as NEC members, Billy Masehla and Thoko Didiza and education MEC Dickson Masemola.
Didiza addressed the crowd saying Worker’s Day is no longer a day to sit at home and do nothing. “This is a day we get together as workers and reflect on our gains and challenges.”
She also discouraged people from thinking some occupations are lesser jobs. She said artisans, for
instance, posess skills that are required right there at Medupi and they will
continue to be in demand.
