Saving rhinos

 
“The war against rhino poaching in the province is tough, but we will fight it tooth and nail,” the provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Simon Mpembe announced this week.

According to Mpembe the provincial Stock and Theft Unit has had many successes this year. This includes the arrest of 31 suspects and the recovery of 11 rifles including two AK 47s, 128 live rounds of ammunition, four rhino horns, two elephant tusks, eight knives and sixes axes.
“We will do our best to empower the unit with resources and also bolster their manpower if the tasks at hand demand so,” Mpembe added.
The provincial commander of Stock Theft Unit, Lt Col Madimetja Mokale said the
dedication and determination with which his colleagues work to curb rhino poaching in the province is the driving force behind all the successes.
The number of rhinos poached in Limpopo in 2013 stood at 19 at the end of April. More than 200 has been killed in SA to date.
