The successful land claim of six farms in the Lephalale region was celebrated on Saturday as members of the Shiko, Shito and Molantoa families gathered at Shongoane 1. The claim was registered in 1996 and awarded to 350 members of the families in 2012.
According to a spokesperson for the families, Stefanus Shiko, the new
owners have plans to establish agricultural businesses on the farms which will be financed through leasing parts of the properties. Agricultural consultants have been appointed to ensure successful
farming of vegetables and the start up of tourism establishments.
“We are excited about the future and happy that land that belonged to our
ancestors, some of whom are buried on the farms, now once again belongs to us.”
The government paid R37-million to buy the farms, some of which belonged to Safarilands as well as land on which Kudu Cash is currently situated.
