Studies to determine the feasibility of a new Coal Based Power Plant in the Waterberg has been commissioned by Vendanta Resources. The company plans to build a 600 Mega Watt coal-fired thermal power plant in the Stockpoort region.
The plant will comprise two 300 MW units and will be known as the Vedanta Power Plant .
The envisaged plant will obtain both low-grade coal and Run of Mine coal from Anglo American Thermal Coal’s proposed Dalyshope Phase 1 Colliery, which is currently in its feasibility development phase.
Digby Wells Environmental Consultants is currently compiling a scoping report which will be followed by an Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Management Plan for submission to the Department of Environmental Affairs to ensure that adverse impacts of the construction, operation and decommissioning of the proposed project are addressed.
The Vendanta Power plant should be commissioned in 2018 and will have a project life of about 30 years. An estimated employment figure of 2000 contract employees will be employed during the construction phase and about 140 permanent employees will be sourced for the project. No housing will be constructed on-site.
Due to the scarcity of water in the Waterberg District, steam turbines commissioned with air cooled condensers will be used. Present water source availability is still to be determined. Proposed water options include the Limpopo River, groundwater and the Mokolo and Crocodile River (West): Water Augmentation Project (MACWAP2) project for long term supply.
