News reports reveal that Exxaro coal mine is partnering with French independent power producer GDF Suez to build a privately-owned 600MW power station in Lephalale.
Apparently the power station will be supplied with coal from Exxaro’s proposed Thabametsi coal mine. The announcement was made amid heightened anxiety over the country’s supply/demand balance after Eskom announced another delay to the Medupi power station, which is now only expected to begin producing during the second half of 2014
While the proposed power station is small compared to Medupi, which will generate 4,800MW, it could be expanded to 1,200MW. Its power will be sold to Eskom and could prove crucial to South Africa, given the construction delays being experienced at Medupi and Eskom’s next power station — Kusile — which is being built near eMalahleni.
