Residents of Mokopane can now have pre-paid water meters installed at their homes. Justice Mukweuho told delegates at last week’s business chamber meeting that these metres have already been installed in RDP extensions 14 and 19.
Mukweuho said people can top up their water tokens at selected outlets and recharge their metres by simply touching the token to it.
The metres are calibrated to the municipal rates system, so the first free litres will remain free and the usage-sliding scale will apply just as it does with normally metered water.
“But you don’t waste any time or money rectifying incorrect water bills,” Mukweuho explained.
He added that the metres are a great water saving tool. No water metres were ever installed in Extension 14.
Prior to the installation of pre-paid metres there, consumption for the area was about 11 mega litres per month, but since installing the metres, consumption has been reduced to less than three mega litres per month.
One of the advantages these metres hold for homeowners is that it cuts off once the money loaded runs out. A burst water pipe can thus only cause so much financial damage. Metres can also be locked when homeowners go away on holiday.
The cost of having a pre-paid water meter installed is about R2 600 and it comes with a one-year guarantee.
