The Lephalale community under the direction of The South African National Civic organisation (Sanco) will participate in a march scheduled for 13
November to hand over a memorandum to the Mayor of Lephalale, Jack Maeko.
According to the Secretary of Sanco in Lephalale, Kenneth Manaka, the march will see hundreds of Lephalale residents march to the municipal offices to protest bad service delivery, corruption and maladministration.
The Chairman of Sanco in Lephalale, Meshack Moloantoa, told Northern News that Sanco wants to see better service delivery for the people of Lephalale. He accused the mayor of opposing the march by threatening to deploy soldiers to stop community members from joining the protest. Sanco have applied for permission and has given notice of the march to the traffic department and the police, but at the time of going to print permission had still not been granted.
“We will go ahead with the march, whether they permit us or not,” Moloantoa said.
Sanco is also concerned that repeated requests for services at MaMojela Park is falling on deaf ears.
“The mayor came to Mamojela park in February and promised that proper sanitation an solar lights would be installed. So far nothing has been done.”
According to Manaka the mayor visited Mamojela park on Saturday to try and dissuade residents from marching. “He was handing out beers and telling people that he did not know about their plight because their councilor, Johanna Mojela had not reported it to him.’
Northern News spoke to Mojela who said that she handed in reports on a monthly basis. She is also concerned that she is not always informed about upcoming
meetings.
Northern News phoned the mayor for comment, but neither he nor the municipal spokesperson, Victor Monyepao, could be reached.
