Every year Rotary Club Potgietersrus hosts its Polio Breakfast where all the money raised goes entirely to Rotary International’s worldwide polio eradication project. Using its network of Rotary Clubs in more than 160 countries Rotary International raises funds in collaboration with international business, governments and other institutions for the distribution of polio vaccine.
Nigeria is the only polio endemic country in Africa and one of only three remaining countries (the others are Afghanistan and Pakistan) that have not been able to stop the transmission of the disease, according to the World Health Organization.
Failure to end polio in these countries would put all other countries are at risk. This contagious disease can be imported, paralyzing children in countries that thought they were done with polio. A recent outbreak in the Horn of Africa serves as a reminder.
Thanks to a worldwide effort of governments and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, including the United Nations, the number of polio cases has dropped from 350,000 a year in 1988 to just 223 last year, and the number of countries where polio is transmitted has dropped from 125 to 3, according to the eradication initiative.
Come and join Rotary Club Potgietersrus for a great breakfast at the Crossing Mall starting at 07h00 on 9h November; tickets are R75 per person. Why not purchase a table (6 people) for R450 for your company staff or sponsor a table for our senior citizens. You will be allowed to display your company Logo at your sponsored table(s).
Tickets can be purchased at Bosman Jewellers at The Crossing Mall or contact me Barry Fagan 0835023094.
