Shack and shops burn in Marapong

Local residents in Marapong who are fed up with crime in their community took to the streets last Thursday and burnt down three shacks and two tuck shops belonging to Zimbabwean nationals.
According to Marapong resident and DA councillor, Stephen Manamela, residents are concerned that crime is escalating in Marapong and the community blames the Zimbabweans. Manamela suggested that the recently established committee of documented Zimbabweans in Marapong be approached to help police trace undocumented foreigners who they believe are responsible for a lot of the crimes perpetrated in the area.
“Zimbabweans who have the necessary documents and who work hard to earn a living are concerned that their fellow countrymen who are not currently employed and who are involved in criminal activities are making life difficult for them.
"We will be working with the police to ensure that there are no further incidents of violence and that undocumented foreigners are arrested.”
Warrant officer Frans Mokoena confirmed this week that a case of malicious damage to property was opened at the Lephalale police station.
He could not confirm whether anyone was arrested following the incident.
