Life sentence for rapist

LEPHALALE – Convicted rapist, Jan Monanyane (22), received a life sentence in the Lephalale regional court on Thursday for the kidnapping and rape of a woman (21) in June 2011.
According to the prosecutor, advocate Lizel Delfrate, rape is becoming a serious problem in the Lephalale area. During the sentencing procedure Delfrate told the judge, Magistrate M. Semenya, that the community will soon take matters in their own hands if the courts don’t impose harsher sentences for the rape of women and children in the area. She told the court that during a weekend in early June 2011 Monanyane kidnapped his victim and held her hostage. The woman was raped and stabbed with a knife several times over that weekend. The accused later resisted arrest, but was detained and held until sentencing on Thursday.
Monanyane was also sentenced for housebreaking for which he received a further 5 years and another 12 months imprisonment for resisting arrest.
