Solly Maile (20), the man suspected of murdering a young woman at her home in Bezuidenhout Street in Mokopane last Friday, appeared in the Mokopane magistrate’s court on Monday.
Maile was not asked to plea and while the state prosecutor, S.M. Setlelele indicated that the state would oppose bail, a bail hearing was scheduled for January 28. The trial will begin on 13 February. Meanwhile Maile will remain in police custody.
Maile allegedly stabbed Naseerah Ismail (22) to death in her house on Friday morning. Her husband, Muqeet Ismail, discovered her body at 12h20 and alerted the police.
Police arrested Maile, who lives in the same complex, shortly after the crime was reported.
On Tuesday Mokopane station commander, Col. Lucas Mogwaneng, issued a press statement urging Mokopane’s public to remain calm in light of separate incidents of serious and violent crimes that plagued the town the past week.
The secretary of the Waterberg was hijacked, assaulted and robbed. Mogwaneng emphasised that these were crimes committed by opportunistic individuals and vowed that the police would not rest until the other perpetrator was also apprehended.
He invited the community to participate in crime prevention initiatives by joining neighbourhood watches, street communities and sector crime forums.
