Two men were sleeping when a crocodile attacked their tent at Rust De Winter Dam last Friday night at about 11h30. Not realising what it was that had ‘bumped’ into them, they went outside to investigate.
Bazil Roth and his friend, Barend Lamprecht, saw a crocodile of about 2.4m in the shallows in front of their campsite. They also saw what appeared to be tooth marks on the side of the tent where Lamprecht had felt the ‘bump’. But, due to the improbability of the scenario, the two men went back to bed, jokingly telling each other to make sure not to touch the sides while sleeping.
Forty five minutes later, the crocodile attacked again. This time it had bitten through the side of the tent, and latched onto Roth’s left foot. Screaming and kicking, Roth managed to free himself from the croc’s jaws. He could see the outline of the crocodile through the mesh window of the tent.
It still had his sleeping bag in its mouth.
Lamprecht rushed outside and
managed to chase the crocodile back into the water. The two men moved their tent further away from the water, and waited for daylight to seek medical attention.
Roth was treated for minor injuries. All the layers of tent material and sleeping bag prevented serious damage to his foot.
When asked to comment, Roth stated that he wants the public to be warned of the danger of this specific crocodile to campers at Rust de Winter Dam, but that he absolutely wants to “avoid a kneejerk reaction and the wholesale slaughter of all the crocs in Rust de Winter”.
His advice for visitors to the dam: “do not camp near the water, and always expect the unexpected.” - Christie Thomas
