The Lephalale municipality requested last week that the town be declared a disaster area. The request will be submitted by the district to the MEC, who will in turn approach National government.
Damage to the R33 (the new Vaalwater road) is estimated at R17-million, that is according to the Department of Roads and Transport.
The road from Lephalale to Marken sustained damage to the value of R15-million. On the Thabazimbi road damage to the lower bridge is estimated at R5-million and the bridge over the Matlabas river will be upgraded to a high level bridge due to damages. The cost of the upgrade is about R 17-million.
According to Lephalale municipal manager, Bob Naidoo, a post disaster assessment meeting will be held on Monday. “The only affected area at the moment is the border post, but even there water is subsiding. We will now start to determine what damage was done to infrastructure. Together with the private sector, the Department of roads and transport has already started to fix roads in the area.”
