Fetching your mail - a health risk?

ONVERWACHT - The post box facility at the Onverwacht Post Office doubles as a bedroom, kitchen and toilet unit for the homeless and residents are fed up with the smell and sight of urine, vomit and rubbish. “It is a health risk,” a resident complained to Northern News last week. “I dread coming to this place to collect my mail and I don’t feel safe coming here after hours or on weekends.”
Management at the Post Office say they have sent several letters to the regional office to complain about vagrants living on the property. They say the Lephalale police requested a letter from the regional office to instruct them to remove anyone living on the premises.
Spokesperson for the Lephalale police, W/O Frans Mokoena says he visited the site last week and agrees that something should be done. He says police will arrest vagrants but that it is the responsibility of the municipality and the Post Office to clean up the mess and remove the belongings of the people living there.
When Northern News investigated on Friday the smell of urine, vomit and human faeces was overwhelming. Head of Waste Management, Joshua Hlapa, said that he would visit the site so see how the municipality can assist in clearing the waste. He also promised to report the matter to the department of health and safety. However, when Northern News went to print on Wednesday, there was no improvement.
