Over 600 learners from 16 schools in Lephalale and surrounding villages will benefit from the first phase of the Exxaro Grootegeluk mine holiday school programme which was officially launched by the Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko, at Matshwara Secondary in Shongoane village and by Councillor William Motlokwa at Mabalane Seleka Technical School last Tuesday.
The holiday school programme is part of a broader education programme that includes Saturday and holiday classes for learner, teacher and principal development. A number of other programmes are included such as a pilot bridging programme for primary school learners to improve their literacy and numeracy levels in order to prepare them better for secondary school.
The learners will receive extra classes in mathematics, physical science, English and career guidance. Speaking at the launch ceremonies, Exxaro Grootegeluk human resource manager, Tebogo Leepile, said, “Exxaro Grootegeluk mine is embarking on this programme to improve the quality of education in public schools in Lephalale. We are responding to the need to enhance the quality of learning and teaching in our local schools. This programme will help us to increase the number of learners to enrol in institutions of higher learning and ultimately cultivate a crop of highly skilled professionals for our company and our country.”
The Department of Basic Education representative, Christina Senoamadi, speaking on behalf of the Waterberg District Director, commended Exxaro’s investment in education. “We appreciate what Exxaro is doing to support the education department in this district. We look forward to many success stories from learners in our rural areas that will benefit,” said Senoamadi.
The Mayor thanked Exxaro for investing in education and encouraged learners to take advantage of the opportunity and to excel in their studies.
Exxaro Grootegeluk Mine Manager, Mervin Govender, is the driving force behind the diverse education interventions proposed for Lephalale and its surrounding labour-sending areas. His message to the community is, “If we strongly believe that the future is in the hands of our young people and we want it to be a great future that we can be proud of, and then we must start turning words into actions. Therefore, we have driven this education project hard to ensure we get all stakeholders on board to make it a reality.
“I appeal to all parents, key stakeholders and teachers to join hands in making a difference in the lives and education of our children. Anything less will be compromising on their future.”
