Former Mogalakwena councillor, Beyers Smit, this week reported back from Cape Town where he has taken up his position as Member of Parliament in the First House of Parliament (The National Council of Provinces - NCOP). Smit is part of the Limpopo delegation of 10 Democratic Alliance representatives.
While he is not the first resident of Mokopane to become a member of parliament, it is noteworthy that he has had to overcome dyslexia to achieve his goals.
Smit was born in Voortrekker Hospital in the old Potgietersrus on 17 May 1980. He grew up as a farm boy around the small bushveld town of Tomburke near the Botswana border. After leaving school he obtained a National Diploma in Management at Technikon Pretoria and later obtained a B-Tech degree in Management through Unisa.
He was an entrepreneur and businessman until he became involved in politics in 2009. He was elected as DA Mogalakwena’s Municipal Constituency Committee chairperson that same year and was as DA PR councillor and executive member of Mogalakwena local municipality in 2010.
