Exxaro, in partnership with the Tsebo Network (TEN) and the department of education, hosted a teacher development programme at Mabalane Seleka Technical School in Onverwacht for teachers in the Lephalale, Palala North and Palala South regions last Friday.
TEN is a national educational service provider specialising in the turnaround of underperformance at high school level and the development of
specific skills pools. This is done by way of supplementary learner development programmes and teacher development programmes, with a focus on the key subjects of mathematics, physical science, accounting, english andmmathematical literacy.
Exxaro Grootegeluk Mine manager, Mervin Govender, told teachers that Exxaro is proud to be associated with the programme and that the mining company’s future in Lephalale - the future energy hub of South Africa - relies on the education of learners in the area.
“These learners will one day be the engineers and skilled workers, working for Exxaro and making sure when Medupi and Coal 3 is built that together with Exxaro coal, 32% of the South Africa’s power supply is generated. As one of the biggest employers in Lephalale we want to give back to the community and education is high on our agenda,” he added.
