Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA) chairman, Madimetja Piet Pale, was killed near his home in Mahwelereng in what many claim to be a political assassination on Saturday night.
Pale was instrumental in bringing a recent high court application to prevent the provincial Cooperative Government, Housing and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) MEC from placing the Mogalakwena municipality under administration. He was shot several times while driving his car less than 500m from his home.
According to a press release by the MRA, Pale left his house after receiving a phone call only minutes before the incident. He apparently tried to flee, but having suffered several gunshot wounds to his body and also his head, he seems to have lost control of his car, which overturned only 400m from where he was shot. He died on the scene.
“His death comes at the time when we are busy rooting out corruption within the Mogalakwena Municipality and we are trying to ensure that the Municipality has the capacity to deliver services to the people,” the MRA said on Monday.
“We condemn all attempts of treating this as [just another] criminal activity. We are shocked at how the provincial government wishes to treat this matter as ordinary incident. We are convinced that this is a well-organised and planned activity, particularly because this incident happened at the time when the municipality has taken a decision to recommend to the MEC of CoGHSTA,
Makoma Makhurupetja, to terminate the membership of councilors who are not
attending the council meetings and forums.
“We call on South African Police Services to treat this matter as a political assassination and establish a team which will ensure that justice is being served. The community and MRA are looking for the full support of all law enforcement agencies to ensure that this type of incident does not occur again,” the MRA concluded its press statement.
The Democratic Alliance added its voice to the call for a special investigative unit. In a press release on Monday, the party’s provincial leader, Jacques Smalle, stated that he believes coordinated political assassinations are being planned in the Mogalakwena municipality.
The DA claims to have a copy of a “hit list” containing Pale’s name and that of other individuals who helped him uncover corruption in the municipality. “We have submitted the list, and all other information relating to this case, to the police for further investigation,” Smalle said.
Among others, the name of Mogalakwena Councillor, Marcelle Maritz, appears on the list.
“We want Premier Mathabatha to take action and establish a task team that will probe what is going on in this municipality. We believe that there is strong evidence that this murder is politically motivated and could be followed by other murders,” Smalle concluded.
A delegation from the Mogalakwena municipality led by mayor William Mabuela, was said to have visited the provincial police commissioner’s office on Tuesday and also the office of the premier to implore them to view Pale’s murder in a serious light. They were asked to investigate the possibility of it being politically motivated by those parties within the municipality that stand accused of corruption and misappropriation of municipal funds.
Provincial police spokesperson, Col. Ronel Otto, on Wednesday confirmed that a special investigative unit headed by a senior provincial official is looking into the murder of Piet Pale and also the alleged hit list.
She asked that anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Pale’s
murderers should contact their nearest
police station or report it anonymously to the toll-free crime number 08600 10111.
