Destiny Alive, Lector SA and Compass Academy of Learning hosted the second Destiny Development Week for Grade 9 learners during the school holidays. The purpose of the development week was to give learners the opportunity to attend a week of preparation and empowerment. This was achieved through accurate training of life—and academic skills needed to successfully complete their education and progress to further/ tertiary training.
The programme targeted Grade 9 learners and hoped to progress them into the ‘JrTukkie’ project at the University of Pretoria. They completed training in the following areas: Personal Life Skills development, Relationships, Reading and Study Skills, and Basic Personal Finances.?The schools represented were: Gojela High School, John Petro High School, Somavugha High School, Ntata High School, Fred Ledwaba High School, EDL Rampola High School, Ebenezer High School, DG Tsebe High School, Mmantutule High School, Kgaba High School, Phaladingoe Technican High School and Ben Hlongwane High School.
Businesses also got involved in the programme, apart from Spur which spoiled the children with burger meals, Ismails Hardwarehouse in Mokopane providing T-shirts to remind them of what they have learned about being agents of change in our community. Ashraf Bayat from Ismails also handed over a bag with gifts to facilitators Marinda Marshall, Imogen van Wyk and Hanell Janse van Rensburg for future use in their programme.
“I enjoyed the programme because it has given me me a foundation and a plan for my life,” learner Mosima Mabelebele said. “Now I know how to build my life and I will be the foundation for change in others.”
Compass Academy of Learning was established in 2008 as a registered closed corporation and is managed by Minda Marshall and Elaine van Rensburg. Lector SA is a result of collaborated research and development of selected countries over 40 years. It focuses on improving reading via beter software, workbooks and methodology.
