While things are tense at the Mogalakwena Municipality following recent political events within the local ANC branches and Mogalakwena Residents Association, it seems it’s business as usual for the local council.
During a special council meeting held at the Lleka Lekalakala chamber at the Mogalakwena Municipality on Monday 21 July several special task force security members could be seen wielding riot shields and weapons. Special body guards protecting individuals served as a reminder of the recent murder of community leader Piet Pale.
However, as the meeting progressed the public in the gallery seemed to settle down and things proceeded smoothly.
The council resolved to rename the Mahwelereng Stadium to Madimetja Piet Pale Sporting Complex but will first advertise this to the community to ensure a fair and democratic process providing the community with the opportunity to make comments.
Appointments included Alfred Malope Tshesane as the new chief financial officer in Komape Mphago’s place. Mokopane Letsoalo, the municipal manager (MM) in the Waterberg District Municipality will fill in as the manager for planning and developmental services.
William Kekana will continue in his post as MM when his contract expires in July 2014.
With Beyers Smit’s departure to serve as a member of parlement for the Democratic Alliance, councilor Marcelle Maritz has been elected to serve as a member of the executive committee of the Mogalakwena Municipal council in Mokopane.
Maritz is well-known for her outspoken views and has been in the news in recent weeks for apparently being on an alleged ‘hit list’ along with Kekana and other members for the MRA following the murder of Piet Pale.
