Mogalakwena mayor, Wiliam Mabeula, officially switched on the electricity to Mokopane extension 14. After four years after the completion of RDP houses in the area, the community enjoys the basic services (water, electricity and roads) from their municipality.
“This is a relief to the community of Extension 14 and a loss to business owners around Mokopane,” says divisional head of communications, Malesela Selokela, in a press statement. “With this development the paraffin, gas and candles sales will drop.”
With the funding provided from the Department of Energy (DoE), the municipality has electrified 873 households in the area. The electrification project, worth R8, 8 million, was started during the 2012/13 financial year by Kgabo Construction but due to last year’s heavy rain the project took longer than expected.
To date, the municipality has electrified its 179 existing villages and its new village extensions which have not been electrified. The power sub-station is currently providing electricity to Extension 14, 19, 20 and will cover other developing areas during the development of the municipality.
“It is our responsibility as the leadership and management of this municipality to provide services to our community. With this team, we have leaders and managers who are willing to serve their communities and we will strive to maintain this. We will continue in ensuring that Mogalakwena is a place for prosperity,” Mabuela said.
