It seems that the controversy surrounding the appointment of William Kekana as municipal manager and the expulsion of councillors on both sides of the division in the local ANC refuses to die down. On Wednesday, about 80 community members took part in a march through town to the municipal offices.
The march was allegedly organised by disgruntled councillors. The Mogalakwena Resident’s Association (MRA) voiced their concerns as the police just kept the peace, escorting the chanting protesters without making any arrests.
“Willy must go,” protesters sang and carried around a makeshift coffin meant for him. They blame Kekana for not taking action against councillors that are suspended
according to a certain faction of the local ANC.
But the municipality, refused to accept the marchers’ memorandum on grounds that the march was illegal.
According to one of the protestors who spoke to Northern News the march was legal and they even had a section 4 meeting at the police station on Monday. He stated that the 23 counsellors that were suspended by a faction of the ANC are not supposed to represent the ANC. Their suspension is being challenged at national level by other members of the local ANC branch.
Marchers also want jobs. John Kekana from section 19 in Mokopane said that they want service delivery and job opportunities. He said that they bring their CV’s to the municipality but never get called for interviews.
Therefore they are requesting the municipal manager as well as the councillors to go.
