Political tension continued to mount as two factions of the ANC protested against each other at the Mogalakwena Municipal offices in Mokopane last Friday.
Several streets were blocked off by the Mokopane police as protesters took to the streets to voice their concerns.
Members from the various branches in the ANC's Mogalakwena sub-region marched to the Mogalakwena municipality. They are demanding that 23 councilors expelled by the ANC must vacate their positions in the municipal council (the councilors were expelled by the ANC for supporting a motion by opposition parties to expel 26 ANC councilors who are implicated in allegations of misconduct and fraud by a forensic audit report drafted by KPMG.
The protesters also demand the axing of municipal manager, William Kekana. An opposing group of ANC members, including members of the Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA), showed their support for the expelled councilors by also taking to the streets and chanting out their message op support to the current mayor, Malose Mabuela and municipal manager, WilliamKekana. Signs stating “William Kekana is here to stay,” were brandished.
The MRA has, on several occasions, called on the National ANC to intervene to calm the situation.
Mogalakwena Municipality spokesperson, Malesela Selokela, said the protestors planned to hand over a memorandum of demands, but that no one from the municipality was available to receive the memorandum as the municipality was not notified of any planned protest action as the law dictates.
