A 50-year-old man was sentenced to 16 years in prison by in the Mahwelereng regional court last week after he was convicted for raping his 14-year-old niece.
The man was home alone with his niece when he asked her to assist him with the DVD-player.
While the victim was distracted, he reportedly grabbed her and pulled her into his bedroom where he forcefully undressed and raped her.
The girl’s mother returned home and found her daughter on the man’s bed still crying.
She told her mother what happened and a charge was laid at the Mahwelereng police station.
The convicted rapist is being held at the Polokwane correctional services.
According to South Africa’s Tears Foundation and the Medical Research Council some 45% of reported rapes are child rapes and 50% of children in South Africa will be abused before the age of 18.
