Lephalale municipality hosted community members of Seleka and Mohlasedi villages for the official opening of the Seleka stadium and the Mohlasedi access road Last Thursday. Limpopo Premier, Stanley Mathabatha, and Lephalale Mayor, Jack Maeko, welcomed the community in celebration of the completion of these two projects.
The Mayor said the municipality is committed to delivering roads and services to rural areas. At the event several wheelchairs were handed over to disabled residents. Five learners who were awarded scholarships to study medicine in Cuba each also received a laptop which was co-sponsored by the municipality, Exxaro and Groothoek mine. The mayor encouraged the youth to take their education seriously.
The Premier congratulated the municipality and asked the community to use the facility to their advantage and to look after it. He said the sports facility is important to keep young people occupied with healthy activities and to steer them clear from social ills such as drugs and crime.
The sports facility can accommodate 3 500 people and will eventually facilitate different activities such as soccer, track, tennis, volleyball, netball and squash. The stadium was built with funds from the Municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) of which the municipality is required to use 15% to build and implement sports and recreation facilities. Around 30 local people were employed during the construction of the facility.
The access road to Mohlasedi village is a 3.5km tar road, making it much easier for private and public transport to access the area. Construction on the road started in April this year after it became clear that the gravel road could not carry the large amount of busses that transport community members daily. During the construction of the road altogether 27 local people were employed.
