Ward councilor accused of stealing wheelchairs

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Lephalale demanded an explanation from ANC ward councilor, Vincent Motlokwa, who is accused of stealing wheelchairs.
“The DA will be writing a letter to the speaker of Lephalale municipality, Rosina Boloka, to summon Motlokwa to appear before the rules and ethics committee following his arrest for allegedly stealing wheelchairs meant for disabled people,” said DA councilor Steven Manamela in Lephalale in a statement to the press.
Lephalale police has confirmed that Motlokwa was arrested earlier this month for allegedly breaking into a house and stealing some 20 wheelchairs.
Warrant officer Frans Mokoena said that a case of housebreaking and theft has been opened.
It seems that the councilor went to a storeroom, allegedly broke the locks and stole the wheelchairs.
The wheelchairs in question were distributed to disabled people at an event attended by Limpopo premier Stan Mathabatha.
According to the DA, the wheelchairs belonged to the Tshimologo Disability Organisation in Marapong. They were donated to the organisation earlier this year.
Motlokwa, however, told police he had an agreement to take the chairs.
He was arrested and appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court where he was released on R500 bail.
He was set to appear in court on October 30 (yesterday).
When contacted by Northern News, the Lephalale Municipality declined to comment on the matter at this point.
