MOKOPANE - Tension continues to mount at the Mogalakwena Municipality as members of the Police again forced open the municipality gates for a second time in less than a month on 24 November. Bricks were thrown at the police officers trying to force open the gate. Police retaliated by shooting rubber bullets. At least one person is reported to be injured.
Once inside, the police made their way to the council chambers, which had already been evacuated. They tried to gain entry to Mayor Malose Mabuela's office which was locked. With them was former Mayor, Thlalafi Mashamaite, who insists on being reinstated. The police action comes in spite of a court interdict granted to municipal manager, William Kekana, and his team to prevent the municipality from being taken over.
The current state of play is that Mashamaite is present inside the council chambers. The Mogalakwena Residents Association has confirmed that the council meeting planned for 14h00 will still go ahead at a venue to be confirmed. It is suspected that the council meeting will deal with the issue of Mashamaite and the other suspended councilors.
Northern News will continue to follow the story as the drama unfolds.
