Recent Health System’s Trust’s 2013/14 District Health Barometer has revealed that not only does Limpopo has the fifth highest teenage pregnancy rates, more disturbingly, 7.9% of children are born to young school-going girls.
This figure exceeds the national norm of 6.8%. According to HST Barometer, Vhembe is at 8.4%, Mopani at 8.1%, Sekhukhune 7.7% while Waterberg is 7.6 % and Capricorn 7.4%.
The answers from Legislature questions put to the department of education by the democratic alliance (DA) suggest that at least 121 schools in Limpopo had a total of 663 pregnant learners in 2013. Of these, 50 learners were between Grades 4-7, 105 in Grade 8, 197 learners in Grade 9 and a total of 311 learners between Grade 10-12 became mothers.
The DA calls on the Limpopo department of education to implement a multi-disciplinary approach to combat this scourge.
