MOKOPANE - Police are investigating a case of attempted arson after the public library in Van Riebeeck street was doused with fuel in what looked like a deliberate attempt at sabotage.
The library was closed temporarily after strong fuel odours were detected inside the building. The carpets at the back of the building were soaked with petrol.
Library staff determined it to be of a suspicious nature as a slightly damaged window hinted at irregularity in what may well have been an arson attempt.
One employee accused impatient municipal workers who have been using the library as a base of operations. These workers have not been able to return to work since political controversy at the Mogalakwena Municipality started in November last year.
Northern News spoke to some officials using the library who deny any involvement, but point the finger to 'intimidators' they say are currently occupying the municipality.
Their theory is that the crime was deliberately committed by 'intimidators' who are trying to "make it seem that this is an act of violence by municipal workers and officials not having their way" and demanding an outcome by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs minister, Pravin
Gordhan.
