In his review of the state of the nation address (SONA) on Tuesday, the minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan, said in service delivery in the Mogalakwena Municipality was to receive urgent attention within 48 hours (from the time of the speech).
The controversy surrounding the Mogalakwena Municipality dates back to November 2014 when the ANC removed, with the alleged aid of police, mayor William Mabuela 0and top management from the premises. They were forcibly replaced by the controversial former mayor, Thlalefi Mashemaite.
Morris Mataboge, regional chairperson for the ANC Waterberg, said that the uprise against the council was the work of a political faction no longer part of the ANC.
Accusations that the local ANC has been using the police to act on their behalf was brought under parliament’s attention by the DA parliamentary leader, Mmusi Maimane, after two recent visits to Mogalakwena. This was followed by two visits by Gordhan.
Maimane, during the SONA debate also mentioned the lack of water in Mogalakwena (referring to areas in Mahwelereng) and said it is not a system failure. “It is a failure of local politicians to put the people first. In this community, service delivery has come to a standstill as ANC councilors wage a factional war over access to the spoils of power.”
“Local police officers with a duty to serve the community have been co-opted by factions to intimidate residents and suppress protest. As the war rages on, rubbish piles up in the streets, sewage pipes continue to leak, and the taps run dry.”
