LEPHALALE - Students at the Lephalale TVET College continued their strike action on Wednesday when about 150 students locked themselves inside the college premises where they committed acts of arson.
Students set fire to a minibus belonging to the college and benches while throwing stones at the police. The fire department attempted to douse flames while protesters tried to deter them. Members of the police's reaction unit from Mokopane was called upon to restore order. Various students were taken to the Lephalale police station for questioning.
Jack Modiba, TVET College Lephalale student support manager, chose not to comment on the state of play and said a press release would be released shortly. Students claim to be unhappy about "being forced to take afternoon classes" due to a shortage of lecturers.
