MOKOPANE - A large number of Waterberg Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College students were arrested earlier this week on charges of public violence while taking part in an illegal strike. They appeared at the Mokerong magistrate court on Tuesday.
“We are unhappy with the college’s administration standards and refuse to accept that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) lack funds to grant us the right to transport, stationary, textbooks and decent facilities,” said an angry group of students outside the court. They accuse of the police of going on a rubber-bullet-shooting-spree before arresting them.
Lizzy Lekoloane, chief executive officer (CEO) of Waterberg TVET told Northern News that management was aware of the students' demands and added that they received no formal writing in form of a memorandum to confirm students dissatisfaction.
“No proper procedures were followed,” she said.
Lekoloane confirmed that management is trying to resolve issues internally. She admitted the shortage of textbooks and referred to a delay in procurement processes, but said that students were supplied with the necessary copies of textbooks to carry on with their studies.
Lekoloane said that the police and campus management will be meeting to discuss the court’s outcome.
