LEPHALALE – Mokolo Dam, situated about 50km south of Lephalale in the heart of the Waterberg is about 145-million m3 and is well-suited for water sports, campers and day visitors. Government recently declared Mokolo Dam one of South Africa's a strategic key points.
This was announced during a Rural Safety meeting last week in Lephalale where attendees were informed that Mokolo Dam has finally been given the acknowledgement it deserves.
The move will ensure that the dam is visited reguarly by key role players in environmental and water resource management fields and that the natural habitat, including fauna and flora, of the dam will receive deserved attention.
According to the National Key Points and Strategic Installations Bill of 2007 the objects of the Act are to ensure efficient and effective control over and optimum security at national key points.
This forces emergency services to assist when required without a disaster being declared in the State Gazette. In the event of a major incident, emergency services will not be bound by municipal boundaries. The dam will form part of only four other key points in Limpopo of which Matimba Power Station is also one.
