MOKOPANE – An off-duty police constable has been charged with assault after what is thought to be a road rage incident that occurred at a garage in Nelson Mandela drive last Saturday night.
Leon Hurter, a security officer at Suricat Security and two colleagues, were called out after receiving two panic alerts from the
garage. Arriving on the scene, they found a badly assaulted man lying on the ground. The injured man was surrounded by several other men.
Hurter says a bystander was waving around a firearm which was then taken by another man, later identified as the owner of the weapon and the policeman in question.
Hurter claims he was unaware of the fact that this particular man was an off-duty police constable. He says hewas forced to take out his own firearm after the man in question allegedly threatened him with the gun. “I believed he was under the influence of alcohol and because he was in possession of a gun, I did what I had to do to get the situation under control,” says Hurter. He managed to persuade the man to lower his fire arm.
The police then arrived at the scene. They informed Hurter and his colleagues that the armed man was a police constable.
The Mokopane police confirmed that a confrontation occurred between the constable and another driver. Their report indicates that the police officer allegedly damaged the tyres of the vehicle the victim travelled in. The police stated that the constable fired a warning shot. A live round of ammunition, a spent case and the firearm was confiscated at the scene.
The victim was treated for head injuries.
The police furthermore said that the incident was reported at the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and an investigation for assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm against the concerned constable is pending.
